THE final piece of the Domain Tennis Centre redevelopment was put in place yesterday with a $1.2 million injection from the Gillard Labor Government. Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Anthony Albanese yesterday announced the funding at the home of the Moorilla International tennis tournament.
With stage two of the upgrades in progress – which will increase capacity to 2500 and provide more comfortable public seating – the Federal Government boost will complete the process in time for the 2011 tournament. The project is included in the budget through the Infrastructure Employment Projects program. The money will be used to complete the centre’s fit-out, which will bring it in line with some of the best boutique stadiums in the world. “I was told the time frame the Lord Mayor [Rob Valentine] has been asking for was to make sure it was completed for the January tournament next year,” Mr Albanese said. “This funding will ensure that happens.”
Moorilla International tournament director Michael Roberts welcomed the government announcement. Mr Roberts said the funding not only secures the future of Hobart’s event, but also now provides the state with significant ammunition to host Fed and Davis Cup ties.
“This is the final piece of the puzzle. The Moorilla Hobart International is here to stay for a number of years now and we have got a great facility, one of the best in the world.” Mr Roberts said. `This will bring it into line with other world-class facilities. “The spectators will get the same experience they get going to any facility around Australia that hosts international tennis. “That’s what we have been struggling with in the past.”

Moorilla Hobart International Media Release
Friday 27 November 2009
Jelena Dokic (NSW) will join fellow Australian Alicia Molik (SA) at the 2010 Moorilla Hobart International.
It will be her second appearance at the tournament having previously competed in 2008.
Announcing her entry into the AO Series event, Moorilla Hobart International Tournament Director Michael Roberts said he is excited at having one of Australia’s top females contesting the event.
“It will be great to see Dokic back in action at the Domain Tennis Centre,” Roberts said.
“She is currently Australia’s No.2 ranked female and was in excellent form leading into the end of the 2009 season.
“She captured the hearts of all tennis fans at the Australian Open in January and hopefully she can continue her form in the main draw here and get her 2010 season off to a winning start.
“With Jelena’s ranking now sitting at No.57 in the world she has direct entry into the main draw in Hobart.
“The fields here are usually very even so she will be a realistic chance of becoming only the second Australian to claim the title,” Roberts said.
Dokic revitalised her career at the Australian Open in 2009 when, as a wildcard entrant, she went on to reach the quarterfinals.
The 26-year-old defeated Tamira Paszek (AUT), No.17 seed Anna Chakvetadze (RUS), No.11 seed Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) and No.29 seed Alisa Kleybanova (RUS) with her Australian Open campaign ending against top seed Dinara Safina (RUS).
Her results at this event saw her ranking jump from No.187 to No.91 allowing her to contest the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.
In October this year Dokic also won a USD$100,000 ITF event in Greece. She backed this up a few weeks later winning another USD$100,000 ITF event in France, her most significant titles in more than seven years.
The former No.4 has previously reached the semifinals and quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2000 and 1999 and the quarterfinal at the French Open in 2002.
Tickets are now on sale for the Moorilla Hobart International through Ticketek, with tickets starting at just $9.90.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.ticketek.com.au or 1300 888 104.

Moorilla Hobart International Media Release
Wednesday 11 November 2009
South Australian Alicia Molik will make her WTA singles comeback in January after she was today given a wildcard into the main draw of the 2010 Moorilla Hobart International. (source)
The former world No.8 returned to professional tennis in September this year following a 12 month retirement.
Before her retirement Molik played at all four Grand Slams, winning two Grand Slam doubles titles (Roland Garros, Australian Open); won the bronze medal for Australia at the Athens Olympics and represented Australia in the Fed Cup and Hopman Cup.
While at the top of her game she claimed several top ten scalps including, Maria Sharapova, Amelie Mauresmo, Anastasia Myskina and Venus Williams.
“I think it’s an incredible opportunity for me to be given another chance to go to Hobart and play again. That’s where it all started for me back in 2003 when I won the title so it’s just fantastic to be going back and I can’t wait to be there,” Molik said.
“The last few months have been fantastic playing on the Pro Tour but I’m really looking forward to having another step up to an even more challenging level, that’s where January will be very important for me… I hope to hit Hobart with a bang in the second week and set myself up for the Australian Open.”
“It’s great to be able to offer Alicia a wildcard into the 2010 Moorilla Hobart International, she is a former champion in Hobart and she has always received strong support from the Tasmanian crowds, Michael Roberts, Moorilla Hobart International Tournament Director, said.
“Alicia was one of Australia’s top female players before she retired and I look forward to seeing her in action.
“The Moorilla Hobart International has a history of players using the event as a platform for a comeback. We saw Serena play in Hobart a couple of years ago after time off through injury and she went on to win the Australian Open that year…Mary Pierce also used the event as a comeback.”
Tickets are now on sale for the Moorilla Hobart International through Ticketek,
with tickets starting at just $9.90.
